Police blotter

Wednesday, Feb. 27

A student in Leonard Hall reported another student was assaulting the reporting student's friend in the building. Public Safety and Metropolitan Police Department officers, the hall's resident director and resident assistants responded to the scene. At the time, the responding parties believed the suspect was intoxicated. The suspect and victim refused medical attention. MPD arrested the suspect for simple assault.

A staff member reported a vehicle parked in the upper McDowell parking lot was displaying a fraudulent parking permit. A Public Safety officer responded and documented the scene. The university will file Judicial Affairs and Mediation Services charges in this case.

Friday, Feb. 29

A faculty member in the Battelle-Tompkins building reported a former faculty/staff member was using the building's terrace level computer lab without authorization. Public Safety officers escorted him off-campus. They also barred him from university property and confiscated his AU identification card.

An RA in Anderson Hall noticed the strong smell of marijuana coming from a room. She made contact with the resident, who indicated he was smoking marijuana in his room. Public Safety officers responded and confiscated a small bag of marijuana from the resident, who is being referred to JAMS.

Saturday, March 1

An RA in Leonard reported an individual was unconscious and intoxicated. By the time a Public Safety officer responded, the individual was conscious. The D.C. Fire Department transported the individual to Sibley Hospital.

A Public Safety officer on traffic duty in the tunnel after AU's basketball game observed an individual yelling and running through traffic. The officer stepped in front of the individual and instructed him to stop. The officer stopped the individual after he attempted to flee. Public Safety barred the individual, who is not affiliated with AU, from university property because of disorderly conduct. They took his picture and instructed him to leave the campus.

Sunday, March 2

An RA in Anderson reported a female student was intoxicated in the sixth floor north women's restroom. DCFD transported the student to Sibley.

The parent of an AU student living off campus reported a non-affiliate was harassing the student. All of the incidents of harassment occurred off of university property. Public Safety advised the parent to contact the Metropolitan Police Department and about security resources available on the campus.

An individual reported that a trash can was on fire near the Nebraska Parking Lot. Public Safety officers responded and extinguished the fire. They also contacted MPD and DCFD because the trash can was D.C. government property.

Public Safety officers responded to Mary Graydon Center after the building's fire alarm system activated. They determined a smoke detector in an elevator shaft triggered the alarm and that people were cooking food near the elevator shaft. They did not find any evidence of smoke or fire. They reset the fire alarm panel and allowed people to re-enter the building.

Monday, March 3

A student reportedly fell unconscious in a Ward Circle Building classroom. By the time Public Safety officers responded, however, the student was conscious and coherent. DCFD and Emergency Medical Services responded, but the student refused medical transport.

An unknown individual reported that a trash can adjacent to the School of International Service Building was on fire. Public Safety officers responded and extinguished the fire. They contacted Facilities Management to remove the debris. The trash bag was damaged, but the trash can itself was not.

A student came to Public Safety's office to report he was receiving cell phone calls from an unknown male who was threatening physical violence and repeatedly used derogatory language. The student said he began receiving the calls after posting his cell phone number publicly on his Facebook profile.

A desk receptionist reported that two individuals were fighting in the Letts-Anderson Quad. Public Safety officers responded and made contact with two male non-affiliates who were attempting to board a shuttle bus at the South side stop. Officers escorted both individuals to the Public Safety office. When questioned, one of the individuals reported he exchanged words with another male, who reportedly assaulted him and fled. Neither of the individuals agreed to identify the female they were attempting to visit. The assaulted individual sustained injuries to his mouth but refused medical attention and signed a Public Safety medical refusal form. Public Safety escorted both non-affiliates off campus.

Tuesday, March 4

A staff member in the Career Center reported that the display case located in front of the office was damaged. Public Safety took photos of the scene.

A student reported an envelope containing a large sum of U.S. currency was missing from a desk drawer in her McDowell Hall dorm room.

A Hughes Hall resident reported that her roommate was vomiting and needed medical attention. DCFD transported the sick student to Georgetown University Hospital.
