CAMPUS BRIEF Bravo and Independent Film Channel added on campus

Students who live on campus can now watch Bravo and the Independent Film Channel on campus cable, according to Housing and Dining Executive Director Chris Moody.

Moody sent an e-mail to on-campus students Tuesday night notifying them of the change. Bravo will be on channel 98 and the Independent Film Channel will be on channel 99.

Housing and Dining had considered adding these channels last spring, but did not think there was enough student support, Moody said in a phone interview.

Students from the Class of 2011 Class Council, the Residence Hall Association and the Student Government asked Housing and Dining to add the channels, Moody said.

"The cost was reasonable to match the level of student support that was interested in it, so we went for it," Moody said.

Housing and Dining did not need to remove any channels to add the new ones, he said.

"This was an unrepresented genre," Moody said.

METRO BRIEF D.C. Council to raise punishment for assaults on Metrobus drivers

The D.C. Council passed a bill that will create stiffer penalties for people who assault Metro operators, The Washington Post reported yesterday.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority reported there were more than 84 assaults on Metrobus drivers in the last year, of which more than 50 occurred inside D.C., according to The Post.

Milo Victoria, chief of Metrobus operations, said the assaults have ranged from spitting to the use of guns and bricks. People have also attempted to strip or sexually harass drivers, The Post reported.

Under the new law, fines for the offense would go up 50 percent and people convicted of the crime would serve longer jail sentences, The Post reported.

NATIONAL BRIEFS 4,500 Copies of North Dakota State University's student newspaper vanish

The editor of The Spectrum, North Dakota State University's student newspaper, filed a police report Friday after 4,500 early copies vanished within hours of distribution, according to The (Fargo, N.D.) Forum.

The stolen edition of The Spectrum had listed the salaries of all NDSU employees. Editor-in-Chief Stephen Baird told The Forum there was "a really nasty possibility" that the issue had upset university faculty members enough to have them confiscate all copies.

Last week's edition also included a special section on campus finances.

It took Spectrum staff 30 hours to compile the salary data, but the papers only needed a few hours to disappear. Five hours after they were distributed, the paper's opinion editor noticed an entire stack missing, The Forum reported.

Baird said it is unlikely readers could have snagged all copies of The Spectrum in one night, despite the issue's popularity.

Obama to give Gore top administration position if elected

Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., said yesterday he would give former Vice President Al Gore a top position in his administration to address global warming.

"Not only will I, but I will make a committment that Al Gore will be at the table and play a central part in us figuring out how we solve this problem," Obama said a town hall meeting in Pennsylvania, according to The Washington Post.

Obama said Gore would play a role in implementing a cap-and-trade program for carbon emissions. The system would lower pollution but could also raise electricity bills from power companies that rely on burning coal, The Post reported.

The senator also stressed that Americans have to do more to save energy.

"All of us are going to have to change our habits," Obama said. "We are a wasteful culture."
