Don't let weather rain on your fashion parade

Rain boots, trenches protect style

April showers bring May flowers, but what should you wear when the rain won't go away? Believe it or not, it is possible to look cute when it's disgusting outside, so this week we have included our best tips on how to look chic until those May flowers show their faces and we can put our rainwear away for the summer.

1. Dark wash and skinny jeans Dark wash jeans - especially skinny ones - are especially useful in the rain to tuck into your boots, keep off the ground and not show rain spots. If your jeans are skinny, they won't drag and get wet in the puddles while on your way to Ward. If your jeans are dark, nobody will see where the raindrops hit them once you finally get inside.

2. Printed boots and umbrellas Printed boots and umbrellas are an easy and fun way to show off your style, even when it's gloomy outside. For our simplistic and preppy fashionistas, J.Crew's Wellies are the perfect option for a simple way to look rainy-day chic. The Wellies come in all different colors with prints such as pink elephants, ladybugs and little whales. As an added bonus, they also come with a protective "Wellies Bag" for you to store them in so they don't get your dorm room wet. For our high-end fashionistas, Burberry, Emilio Pucci and Salvatore Ferragamo offer sleek and functional rain boots. For edgy girls and guys, Ed Hardy, known for his vintage tattoo wear, offers many original rain boots for the season as well.

3. The trench coat There's a reason why the trench coat is a fashion staple on almost every designer's top 10 list, and also why every high-end designer has their own variation. Trench coats can be worn at any time but are especially useful in the rain. Their waterproof shell and windproof exterior offer a fashionable and extremely functional means of looking good in bad weather. A new variation of the trench coat we have mentioned before is the transparent trench. In hot pink, orange or completely clear, it is a fashion-forward take on this classic fashion staple.

4. Rain boot flats We absolutely love this new trend because the functionality of rain boots is combined with the demure simplicity of ballet flats. Why do we love them so much? Because they have the potential to throw Crocs out of the rainy day fashion empire. Seriously, if you have them, please replace them with rain boot flats. The best variations on this fashion trend are definitely at J.Crew at the moment in bright spring colors such as green, yellow and blue. These rain boot flats also come in bedazzled versions for the funkier fashionistas and in eyelet-style ones with holes in them for those of you who find it really difficult to fully part with your Crocs.

So for the next few weeks when you wake up and look out the window to see another rainy D.C. morning, don't worry. We're sure you'll be seeing lots of bright colors, trench coats and rain boot flats to brighten your day.

Stay Stylish, Lara and Virginia
