Letter to the editor

Vidulich's previous letter neglects other AU sports

As an AU student athlete, I support of all of our sports teams because I know the work that goes into competing at the Division I level. March Madness ran rampant all over campus, but Joe, the basketball boys aren't the only team AU fields, and they aren't the only good team at that. Field hockey. Volleyball. Cross country. Track. Wrestling. All these teams have "played on the national stage" recently at AU. I thought as the previous head of Blue Crew, you of all people would know that and publicly endorse these teams as well.

I would be willing to bet that no one on campus attended the NCAA wrestling championship when Josh Glenn won. I also wonder if anyone, even you, could say how many times the field hockey and volleyball teams have consecutively won Patriot Leagues and entered the NCAA Tournament in recent years (hint: multiple times). The men's and women's track teams have broken school records this year alone, yet I've seen no letters to The Eagle from you praising their victories. I understand basketball is a favorite sport among Americans, nationwide and school-wide, but at least acknowledge the fact that our school has other teams. Teams whose athletes work just as hard for a fraction of the glory, no matter how good they are. Teams who wake up early, train all year round and compete to gain respect for AU, even though 100 fans aren't usually willing to walk the two minutes across campus to attend a game, let alone pay to drive hours to get there. I'm sure our athletes appreciate their parents' support, but it would be nice if people other than those morally obligated cared as well. So, on behalf of AU's student athletes, thanks for the support, Joe. Go Eagles!
