McFerrin moving to Memphis

Women's basketball coach Melissa McFerrin has been hired by the University of Memphis to coach its women's basketball team. McFerrin carried the Eagles to the Patriot League season championship title this year and advanced AU to the postseason for the first time since 1998.

McFerrin was with AU for four seasons and had a 50-70 overall record.

"We wish Melissa well," Athletic Director Keith Gill said in an AU Athletics press release. "We appreciate her dedication to the program the past four seasons."

AU Athletics will now begin the search for a new women's basketball coach.

AU alum runs Olympic Trials

AU alumna Samia Akbar came in 18th place in the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials -Women's Marathon Sunday morning in Boston. Akbar had a final time of 2:39:19, 10 minutes more than the official winning time of 2:29:35. Akbar graduated from AU in 2003 from the College of Arts and Sciences. While at AU, she competed under coach Matt Centrowitz's instruction for the cross-country and indoor and outdoor track teams.
