Officer charged with overtime fraud

Prosecutors charge that a D.C. police officer falsely reported overtime and stole $178,611 from the District, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.

Authorities claim Karin Coppens forged documents claiming to complete the MPD radar program's 40 hours of training. Coppens faces federal charges in the case because the program uses federal funds, according to The Post.

The 23-year police force veteran never completed the 40-hour training class and allegedly forged her supervisor's signature on the paperwork, prosecutors told The Post.

Coppens filed 94 time sheets claiming 3,400 hours of work from August 2004 to June 2008, according to the charging papers.
