Eagles hold off Dukes for 1-1 draw

The AU men's soccer team tied with James Madison University Wednesday afternoon, drawing 1-1 with the Dukes. The match improves the Eagles' record to 3-3-1 on the season.

The Eagles opened the match strong, controlling possession through the beginning of the first half.

After numerous scoring chances that just missed the target, AU scored first in the 38th minute of play. Junior captain defender Karsten Smith scored a header off a crossing pass from sophomore midfielder Jamie Davin to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

The possession was split during the rest of the half, as AU headed into halftime with the same 1-0 score.

The Dukes were able to get on the scoreboard in the 48th minute of the second half with a floating shot from sophomore midfielder Andrew Harvey to tie the game up at one.

The Eagles dominated the play for the majority of the second half. However, they were unable to capitalize on these opportunities, sending the game into overtime.

Playing in their second overtime game of the season, the Eagles came out looking to get their first victory in the extra session.

Despite multiple shots at the goal, the Eagles were unable to get the game-winner, leaving the game to end in a 1-1 tie.

The Eagles return home Saturday as they take on George Washington University at Reeves Field. The game kicks off at 1 p.m.
