Women's soccer team falls to Richmond on own goal

Eagles lose after defense breaks down

The AU women's soccer team lost a 1-0 nail-biter to the University of Richmond on Tuesday afternoon. The loss drops the Eagles' record on the season to 3-3-1.

AU controlled the opening minutes of the game, taking the ball deep into Spiders territory but were unable capitalize on their efforts.

AU's first shot of the game came in the 17th minute, as senior midfielder Lindsey Miller took a pass from junior midfielder Erin Stebbins, but her shot went just wide of the net.

The Spiders were first on the scoreboard, taking advantage of a lapse in the Eagles' defense to put the ball in the net. After putting pressure on goal, senior defender Sarah Hilt's shot was tipped by the AU defense into the team's own net, giving Richmond a 1-0 lead, an advantage they would keep entering halftime.

In the second half of play, AU kept up its offensive pressure, which resulted in three corner kicks. However, as in the opening half, they were unable to take advantage of these plays, ending the game on the losing end of a 1-0 score.

Over the entire course of the game, Richmond outshot the Eagles 15-4 but Eagles senior goaltender Kelsey Wiggins kept the team in the game with four saves in the losing effort.

The Eagles return to action on Friday when they travel to New York to take on Columbia University. The game kicks off at 7 p.m.
