The Virginia State Board of Elections passed legislation Tuesday to ban voters from wearing any campaign paraphernalia to polling places.
The ban prevents people from wearing any campaign clothing, hats, buttons or other campaign material that supports or condones any candidate or party within 40 feet of polling entrances, according to The Washington Post.
The American Civil Liberties Union told The Post the ban is a direct violation of voters' First Amendment rights.
The elections board passed the legislation in an attempt to avoid campaigners' unnecessary tension and influence on voters, The Post reported.
