Two senators receive award for helping fight hunger

Former Sens. Bob Dole, R-Kan., and George McGovern, D-S.D., were awarded the World Food Prize Thursday in Des Moines, Iowa, for their work toward fighting child starvation worldwide.

The two created the George McGovern-Robert Dole International Food for Education and Nutrition Program in 2000, according to the Associated Press.

The World Food Prize Foundation said the fund was able to supply 22 million meals to children in 41 countries as well as boost overall school attendance by 14 percent.

Dole and McGovern will split the $250,000 cash prize. The ceremony was part of the two-day Iowa Hunger Summit, which began Tuesday, according to USA Today.

This focus of the summit this year was "Confronting Crisis: Agriculture and Global Development in the Next Fifty Years," USA Today reported.
