Roman Empire bust found in Jerusalem

Archaeologists in Jerusalem said in a statement Monday that they have unearthed a small marble bust they believe dates back to the Roman Empire, CNN reported.

The bust is only about six centimeters tall and is thought to be that of a boxer or other athlete. Archaeologists believe the bust was made in the second or third century and passed down through a Roman merchant family before being lost in an earthquake in the fourth or fifth century A.D.

The archaeologists also said that two small holes suggest it was used as a weight on a balance scale.

Archaeologist Doron Ben-Ami told CNN the bust was impressive because of the level of detail finish.

No other images of the boxer have been found in Israel, the archaeologists said in the article.
