Would-be escapees stopped after collision

In a scene that could have been taken directly from a cartoon, two prisoners in Hastings, New Zealand failed to escape from police Wednesday after colliding while they tried to run past a light pole while handcuffed together, according to the Associated Press.

Police were leading Regan Reti and Tiranara White from their cells at the Hastings District Court when Reti and White tried to flee custody. The two made it across the street, where they attempted to run past the pole on opposite sides, despite being handcuffed to each other. The prisoners collided and fell to the ground. Police quickly caught up to them and brought them back into custody.

Reti pled guilty to a charge of escaping police custody, and will serve a month in prison in addition to more than two years for earlier assault charges, the AP reported.

The incident was caught on a security camera, according to the AP.
