Senate advocates Campus Connect

The Undergraduate Senate unanimously approved a resolution Sunday advocating to automatically enroll AU undergraduate students in Rave's AU Campus Connect program.

Public Safety established AU Campus Connect, which allows the department to contact students via text message or e-mail in the event of an emergency on campus or in the city, according to the legislation.

The resolution, sponsored by Class of 2010 Sen. Colin Meiselman, seeks to raise student registration with Rave from the current 3,000 participants. Public Safety has unsuccessfully pushed for more students to join the program, especially after a suspicious package was found in an on-campus parking garage in October, Meiselman said. The program notified students during the package incident and would also be applied to other emergency situations.

"It is tantamount to have a proper communication system in place in the event of an emergency," he said.

Despite multiple posters and Student Government e-mails advertising AU Campus Connect, Public Safety has been unable to increase student enrollment in the program, Meiselman said. Many senators also said they had trouble signing up for the program and liked the idea of automatic enrollment that would circumvent registration difficulties.

The resolution also includes a provision that would allow students to opt out of the program if they did not wish to participate.
