Two train derailments near the Bethesda Metrorail station Friday caused a backup on the system's red line over the weekend, according to The Washington Post.
The first derailment occurred between the Bethesda and Friendship Heights stations at 4:24 p.m. The train was carrying 84 people, but no injuries were reported. A second train that officials planned to use to push the first train out of the way also derailed before it could be coupled to the first train, the Post reported.
Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority officials told the Post the cause of the derailments was a piece of broken rail. They anticipated that repairs would last until Monday morning.
