Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

Thumbs up to ...

... daffodils. These cute and cheery blossoms bring joy to even the coldest, most desolate heart. The girls love them, and the boys love what happens after they give them to the girls. Springtime at AU has never been so endearing.

... the Rude Mechanicals' production of "Romeo and Julian." In a word - ballsy. The Rude Mechanicals are putting on a version of the classic Shakespearean play with a twist. Having partnered themselves with the GLBTA Resource Center, the Mechanicals should be commended for their daring performance and their commitment to, and promotion of, equal rights.

... the Emanuel family. These kids are BAMF. Rahm Emanuel could be called the Hebrew Hammer of the White House. Gritty, tough and hard-nosed, he just straight up deserves some respect. Zeke Emanuel also works in the White House, engineering universal healthcare. But perhaps the most bad-ass of the family? Ari Emanuel, who served as the inspiration for the Ari Gold character on "Entourage." Good grief, what a family.

... Jon Stewart. Never before has a man so vehemently channeled such eloquently vulgar populist rage. Jim Cramer, host of CNBC's "Mad Money," was put on the retreat as he dodged pointed questions and unfortunate video clips dug up by Stewart and his team of sleuths. Cramer or CNBC might not be the right people to go after, but who the hell cares? Never let the truth get in the way of good TV.

Thumbs down to ...

... Barack Obama. That's right, Barack Obama - for picking against AU in his March Madness bracket. He picked against AU ... against America! It's hard to reconcile this fact against his normally upstanding character, so there can be only one explanation.

It must have been a political decision - he's campaigning for re-election already, and Villanova University has more conservative students. He's reaching across party lines. But he's still turning his back on his backyard. Who says truth has to get in the way of decision-making?

... the NCAA. The bastards gave us only a couple hundred tickets to the game. Most are "reserved" for alumni who make significant contributions. Those greedy schmucks at the NCAA shaft us by saving as many seats as possible for paying spectators. Making unreasonable amount of money on events that are played by and for students. Not okay.

... piles of mulch everywhere. Did they honestly have to put them right in the walkway, where everyone walks to go to class? Ridiculous! Don't misunderstand; we're all big fans of campus beautification. It's clear that mulch is required for pretty daffodils. But right outside the dorms? Come on. It smells like crap too.

... to the end of spring break. Devastating! We get all cranked up for midterms and then we're cut loose for a week. It's wonderful! Some spend it on the coach, others in the bar. Wherever you were, it was better than here.
