Crusaders steal Senior day

The AU women's lacrosse team lost against the College of the Holy Cross 16-12 Saturday, spoiling Senior Day.

A day that should have been filled with celebration ended with a heartbreaking defeat. The team came out firing as Leslie Fischer, one of the team's four seniors, scored 12 seconds into the game. Even with the fast start, AU couldn't handle the Crusaders' potent offense. The first half ended with the Crusaders scoring three straight goals to break up the tie.

The Eagles started the second period much like the first, scoring quickly to bring the score to 10-6. The next 15 minutes were perhaps the most painful for the Eagles all year, they were held scoreless for the next 15 minutes as Holy Cross extended its lead to a dominating 16-6. All was not lost however, as AU went on a monster 6-0 run to close out the game.

Even though the last-second push was not enough to usurp the lead from Holy Cross, the team had a lot to be proud of. Out of the six seniors honored, four of them recorded a goal in their final game. Fischer led the scoring with a hat trick on three shots.

The story of the game was the turnovers. Even though the Eagles had fewer turnovers than Holy Cross, they came at the worst times. It was an even split by period, with 10 in the first and 10 in the second. The 10 first period turnovers was the driving force behind the Crusaders' big lead.

With the loss, AU falls to 3-13 on the year. The season was not what the Eagles were hoping for, as they also had a dismal Patriot League season where the team won one game. The good news for the Lady Eagles is that the team is relatively young, made up almost entirely of freshman. The new year of experience should help the Eagles improve on this season.
