Eagles fall at home to Hokies, 19-11

Freshman Lauren Schoenberger scored a career high four goals, while senior midfielder Leslie Fischer and freshman midfielder Bernadette Maher each recorded a hat-trick but it was not enough to prevent the Eagles from falling to Virginia Tech 19-11 Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Eagles' record to 2-10 overall and 1-4 in Patriot League play.

Virginia Tech took an early 2-0 lead and never looked back. Fischer scored her first goal of the game to cut the lead down to 2-1 but four straight Hokie goals put the Eagles in a 6-1 hole with 13 minutes to go in the first half.

The Eagles would trade goals back and forth with the Hokies during the rest of the half, but Virginia Tech took a 13-7 lead into the break.

Any hopes of an AU comeback were quickly dashed at the start of the second half, as the Hokies scored three straight goals, including back-to-back tallies by Rachel Culp, to go up 15-7 with 17 minutes to go in the game. Culp scored a game-high seven goals in the match.

AU responded with two goals of their own from Maher and Schoenberger to cut the lead down to 17-10 but this would be as close as the Eagles got for the rest of the match, falling by the final score of 19-11.

The Eagles will look to get back on the winning track when they take on the University of Maryland, Baltimore County on Jacobs Field at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
