Five AU women's lacrosse players had multiple goal efforts, but it was not enough to prevent the team from suffering its third-consecutive defeat, falling to the University of Maryland, Baltimore County Retrievers 11-10 Wednesday afternoon. The loss drops AU's overall record to 2-11 and 1-4 in the Patriot League.
The game started out strong for the Eagles. Despite giving up the opening tally only 47 seconds into the match, sophomore midfielder Brit Ferguson and senior attacker Gina Ibello scored back-to-back goals to give AU the 2-1 lead at the 21-minute mark.
However, this would be the last lead that the Eagles would hold throughout the rest of the match. After trading goals during the beginning of the first half, UMBC scored three straight goals to end the half, taking a 7-4 lead into the break.
Freshman midfielder Bernadette Maher scored her second goal of the game to cut the lead down to two, at 7-5, five minutes into the second half but once again, the Retrievers scored three consecutive tallies to take a commanding 10-5.
The Eagles refused to fall apart, scoring four of the next five goals in the match.
Ferguson's second goal of the match scored on a free position shot with less than two minutes remaining in the game to cut the lead down to only 11-10 but this was not enough to prevent the Eagles' eventual one-goal loss.
Along with Maher and Ferguson, Ibello, freshman attacker Lauren Schoenberger and senior midfielder Leslie Fischer also scored a pair of goals in the game.
The Eagles will look to get back on the winning track at 1 p.m. Sunday, when they take on the Davidson Wildcats on Jacobs Field.
