Let me begin by commending The Eagle, and its editorial staff, for being involved with this campus enough to speak with all of the candidates for Student Government executive positions and publish endorsements; it says a lot that they find such an issue so important. However, I am disappointed that they are not fully involved and did not take the chance to inform the students of American University about all of the student leader elections. Even while having all the necessary information pertaining to the elections for the Residence Hall Association Executive Board, The Eagle refused to transmit this information to the student body.
While I know how important the SG may be, being a member of that organization's Board of Elections, I also know that the Residence Hall Association is just as important, if not more. The majority of this university's undergraduate population lives on campus in one of the seven residence halls or on Tenley Campus. For all of these students, the RHA is the main advocate for residence hall issues and the main programmer. The SG may stand for all AU students, but RHA stands specifically for the large portion of students who live on campus and is much more in tune with resident issues.
I cannot believe that the residents of this fine university were essentially left out in the cold by a paper which calls itself the "students' voice." While The Eagle constantly bemoans both RHA and SG for not informing the students, it is truly the paper that is lacking in this area. I know that the incoming executives of both organizations will do a fine job on behalf of the residents and overall student body, respectively. I can only hope that The Eagle will do the same.
