Police blotter

Wednesday, Oct. 14

A student reported her wallet was stolen either from Bender Library or the Terrace Dining Room. She took the wallet out of her purse at the library and does not remember if she replaced it. Then she went to TDR to eat lunch, went to class in the Ward Circle Building and noticed the wallet missing.

A desk receptionist reported seeing an unidentified individual leaving Anderson Hall with what he thought may have been a weapon. The Department of Public Safety searched the area. No weapons were found.

The Department of Public Safety discovered a paper towel dispenser was ripped from a lower level men's bathroom wall in the School of International Service Building and placed in a sink. Facilities Management was contacted for repairs.

Thursday, Oct. 15

A Career Center computer was taken from a supply closet in the McKinley Building. The computer contained no personal or sensitive information.

A student reported his roommate showed him several pieces of paper containing the student's Social Security number and bank account information. The roommate told the student that he would have to pay him to get it back or the roommate would sell it to someone. The student demanded the paper from the roommate. The roommate gave it to him.

DPS responded to a report of a sick person in the Sports Center. The individual signed a medical refusal form.

A student placed property, including a wallet, cell phone and keys on a table in Mary Graydon Center and walked away for five minutes. When she returned, the property was gone.

A resident assistant found derogatory words written on a piece of paper and stapled to a bulletin board in Letts Hall. The resident assistant indicated she would remove the paper. No damage was reported.

Near midnight, an officer from the Metropolitan Police Department came to DPS to acquire information on a student. The officer advised that a male AU student had been arrested for theft, which occurred at a store located in the 4500 block of Wisconsin Avenue N.W. the day before. A resident director was contacted. The information was provided to the MPD officer.

Friday, Oct. 16

A resident in Letts reported someone entering her room through an unlocked door and awakening her. Believing it to be her roommate, the resident never looked at the person. The resident heard the person rummaging through her roommate's drawers and closet and noticed a flashlight being used. The resident heard the person leave the room. The next day, the resident asked her roommate about the flashlight and incident and discovered it was not the roommate that had entered the room. The roommate checked her belongings and did not notice anything missing.

An employee reported a suspicious person seen looking around the second floor of the McKinley Building. When asked if he needed help, the suspicious person indicated he was looking for a room with a computer from which he needed information.

A fourth floor smoke detector in Letts activated a fire alarm. DPS noticed a smell of burnt food coming from a fourth floor lounge. Burnt food was discovered on the bottom of a stove in the lounge. The alarm was reset.

Saturday, Oct. 17

The D.C. Fire Department transported a sick person in Anderson Hall to a hospital.

A laptop computer and a GPS were taken from a locked, parked vehicle in Bender Parking Garage. No signs of forced entry were found. The computer had personal information, including account passwords, on it. The computer was password protected.

DPS approached an individual walking with two bicycles in the Letts-Anderson Quad. Upon asking the individual where he was going with the bikes, the individual released the bikes and attempted to flee. DPS detained the individual. A severed bike lock was recovered from the individual. The individual was issued a barring notice. MPD took custody of the individual, lock and bicycles and transported the individual for processing.

Sunday, Oct. 18

An RA reported graffiti, including profanity, written on hallway walls and a door in Letts. Additionally, several hallway ceiling tiles were knocked out of place. Two tiles were damaged. Aramark was contacted to remove the graffiti.

An RD gave a "marijuana grinder" to DPS. The RD indicated she entered an Anderson room due to a suspicious smell and a student gave the grinder to her. Residue in the grinder tested positive for marijuana. Housing and Dining will be handling the incident.

Monday, Oct. 19

An AU ID was stolen and fraudulently used at an Anderson vending machine for an amount of $5.25.

A fire alarm activated in the Sports Center. No sign of smoke or fire was found. Facilities Management indicated steam activated a smoke detector. The alarm was reset. DCFD did not need to respond.

A student reported his bicycle taken from a bike rack outside Hughes Hall. The bike had been recovered in a previous case where a suspect was apprehended. The student was advised to contact MPD to claim his bike.

A bicycle was taken from a bike rack outside the McKinley Building. The bike had been secured to the rack via a wire key lock.

A bicycle was taken from a bike rack outside Leonard Hall. The bike had been secured to the rack via combination lock.

Tuesday, Oct. 20

DPS, MPD and DCFD responded to an injured person on Massachusetts Avenue and Nebraska Avenue N.W. The individual was not transported to a hospital.

A victim spoke to DPS via telephone and reported the following: As he was about to get onto an AU shuttle near the Tenley Metro Station, a suspect bumped him from behind and pulled his wallet out of his back pocket. The suspect ran. The victim chased him. After taking the cash, the suspect dropped the wallet. The victim recovered it. The victim caught the suspect near Wisconsin Avenue. Very soon thereafter, an MPD officer arrived on scene and took control of the suspect. The suspect handed the cash to the victim. The MPD officer asked if the victim wanted to press charges. The victim replied, "No." The victim left the area and is not sure if the MPD officer released the suspect or took him into custody.

A Housing and Dining employee reported a smoking device with black residue found in a Nebraska Hall room during a search. The residue smelled like marijuana. The resident of the room was not present during the incident. The device was given to DPS. The residue in the device was unable to be tested. Housing and Dining Programs will handle the matter.

DPS noticed a student standing in an open window with her back towards the LA Quad. DPS advised her to remove herself from the window immediately. A resident director was notified. DPS made contact with the student in the window and three friends inside the room. The student in the window advised DPS she was using the window to cross over from her bed to access her dresser. She was advised of the hazardous nature of the incident. The RD spoke with her.
