Correction Appended

AU’s women’s volleyball team was victorious in two matches on Saturday, beating Campbell 3-2, and then beating William & Mary, 3-0 to win the Colonial Challenge. The Eagles’ senior Magdalena Tekiel was named the tournament’s MVP.

The Eagles improved to 6-1 by beating Campbell in five sets to drop them to 1-6 on the year. AU won with scores of 25-12, 23-25, 19-25, 25-15 and 25-6. They outscored the Camels 65-33 in the match.

Tekiel led the way for the Eagles by converting her third double-double of the early season. She had 20 kills, 12 digs and six block assists to go along with a .447 hitting percentage. Juliana Crum also had a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs. It was the first double-double of her career.

Angelina Waterman recorded 15 kills, while Katerina Cinkova had seven kills and five block assists. Krysta Cicala helped the offense with 49 assists, while Deborah Frantz had 19 digs.

The Eagles won the title match against William & Mary in straight sets. They won by a score of 25-19, 25-20 and 25-19. Tekiel was strong once again. Both she and Waterman recorded 17 kills. Cicala had 40 assists and 12 digs for AU to convert the second double-double of her career.

Frantz led the defense in this one with 13 digs, while Cinkova recorded four block assists.

This is the second tournament the Eagles have won this season after winning the D.C. Volleyball Challenge last weekend, in which Tekiel was also awarded tournament MVP.

The Eagles’ 6-1 record after their first seven games marks their best start to the season in 10 years. That year AU ended up with a 26-4 overall record.

The Eagles’ next match is Friday, Sept. 10, at 10 p.m. at Oregon. They also have a match scheduled for next Saturday against Sienna at 8 p.m.
