Police blotter

Jan. 11

Damage was discovered on a parked AU vehicle in Centennial Loading Dock A. A rear wheel well was damaged and black paint was noticed on the right side of the vehicle.

The D.C. Fire Department transported a sick person from the new School of International Service building to the hospital.

Jan. 12

The Department of Public Safety discovered graffiti in a men’s restroom stall in Kreeger. Aramark was requested to have it removed.

An accident occurred when a semi-tractor-trailer was attempting to back into the delivery entrance of Federal Hall while an AU vehicle was attempting to back out of the same loading area. The tractor-trailer struck the driver’s side mirror of the AU vehicle. No injuries were reported. The tractor-trailer was not damaged.

Jan. 13

Employees working in an electrical closet in Beeghly activated the fire alarm. Public Safety and Facilities Management responded. There were no signs of smoke or fire.

A former student reported that someone created a Craigslist posting in her name without her permission. Craigslist was able to identify a possible suspect by the reply e-mail address associated with the posting. The incident will be referred to the Office of Student Conduct.

A laptop was taken from a parked, unattended vehicle in the Sports Center Garage. The complainant was not sure whether she locked the vehicle. There was no personal information stored on the computer.

Public Safety responded to a report of an injured person in the Sports Center. The individual signed a medical refusal form.

Public Safety and Facilities Management responded to a fire alarm in Capital Hall. Capital and Federal Halls were temporarily evacuated. Smoke came from the fourth floor’s south end. A strong burnt odor came from a kitchen burner but no burnt objects were found. Aramark was contacted.

A bicycle was taken from the bicycle rack outside of Asbury. It had been secured to the rack with a cable combination lock.

Jan. 14

Facilities Management responded and released a community member from a stuck elevator in the Mary Graydon Center. No injuries were reported.

A glass rose was left on a desk overnight in Osborn. It was discovered damaged the next morning.

DCFD transported a sick person from McCabe Hall to the hospital.

An AU computer and docking station were taken from a room in Asbury. No personal information was stored on the computer.

Jan. 15

A bulletin board door panel in Anderson Hall was discovered damaged. Portions of the panel’s frame were on the floor.

Public Safety responded to a report of a sick person in Letts Hall. Upon arrival, Student 1 was sleeping on a bed. Student 2 said he and Student 1 had been drinking at a fraternity house off-campus from 9:50 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. Public Safety was unable to wake Student 1. DCFD transported Student 1, accompanied by Student 2, to the hospital.

While conducting routine patrols, two resident assistants noticed an odor of suspected marijuana coming from a room in Letts Hall. The resident assistants, resident director and Public Safety went to the room. Student 1 gave the resident director one suspected marijuana cigarette, rolling papers and a glass smoking pipe. The resident director gave the items to Public Safety. Student 1 and Student 2 denied smoking in the room. The substance tested positive for marijuana. The incident will be referred to the Office of Student Conduct.

Jan. 16

Public Safety observed a male urinating in the grass area outside McDowell Hall. He was identified and sent on his way. The incident may be referred to the Office of Student Conduct.

While conducting rounds in Anderson Hall, a resident assistant detected an odor of suspected marijuana. Upon further investigation, the resident assistant saw green leafy substance which she thought was marijuana. The room was occupied by six students. Upon questioning students, the resident assistant learned the substance was “K2,” synthetic marijuana. Public Safety observed a bottle of rum and a bottle of vodka sitting on the floor of the room. The students were advised “K2” had recently become illegal. Student 3 initially denied being an AU student but later recanted and produced her AUID. A resident assistant escorted student 2 to a women’s restroom to empty the bottles of alcohol. A resident assistant provided Public Safety with the remaining K2. The incident will be referred to the Office of Student Conduct.

DCFD transported an injured person to the hospital from Letts Hall.

Public Safety responded to a report of a sick person in the Letts/Anderson Quad. The individual admitted to being intoxicated. A medical refusal form was signed.

Public Safety discovered a security plate cover missing from the middle flagpole in the Butler Gardens.

Jan. 17

DCFD transported a sick individual to the hospital from Nebraska Hall.

A student reported that she was inappropriately propositioned by a cab driver during her cab ride back to campus. Public Safety attempted to identify the company and driver.

Students 1 and 2 stated an individual not known to them snatched a paper sign from their Anderson Hall room door around 1:25 a.m. The sign had Student 1’s name on it. The individual ripped up the sign and ran down the hall. Student 1 yelled at the individual. At around 1:45 a.m., Public Safety found the individual, Student 3, in Letts Hall. Student 3 stated he had been drinking since 12:20 a.m. and had things on his mind. Student 3 stated there was alcohol in his McDowell Hall room. Public Safety and a resident assistant escorted Student 3 to his room and located two 1.75 liter bottles of vodka. He disposed of it. The incident will be referred to the Office of Student Conduct.

Public Safety and a resident director responded to a report of a sick person in McDowell Hall. A resident assistant was also present. The resident director advised Public Safety that their services were no longer needed.

DCFD transported a sick individual to the hospital from Anderson Hall.

Jan. 18

Bank cards and cash were discovered to have been taken from a wallet located in a desk drawer in a Leonard Hall room which was temporarily left unsecured. Fraudulent charges were made on the bank cards.

A student reported being struck by a vehicle off campus. He stated he was crossing Nebraska Avenue NW with the walk sign illuminated when he was struck by a vehicle turning northbound onto Nebraska Avenue. The collision caused him to strike the hood of the vehicle before falling to the ground. He got up and walked back to the sidewalk. The vehicle did not move. The driver remained in the vehicle. The student motioned for the driver to proceed. The vehicle left the scene. The student experienced pain and went to Public Safety. The student signed a medical refusal form. He stated he was leaving Public Safety with his brother to go to the hospital.

Jan. 18

Public Safety discovered red spray paint graffiti on several cinder blocks on the exterior of the Ward Circle Building’s northeast stairway.

Jan. 20

A student secured his bicycle to a bike rack outside the Ward Circle Building with a U-shaped lock on Dec. 9. On Jan. 5, a friend noticed the bike was gone. The student returned from winter break on Jan. 10, confirmed the bike was gone, and eventually reported the stolen bike to Public Safety.

Jan. 21

Facilities Management and Public Safety responded to a fire alarm in McCabe Hall. Steam engulfed a boiler room. Facilities shut off a pressure release valve. No damage was reported.

Public Safety responded to a report of a sick person in the Ward Circle Building. The individual signed a medical refusal form.

Public Safety responded to a McDowell Hall room while Residence Life staff conducted an administrative search of the room. A glass smoking device containing suspected marijuana residue was found in a safe. A grinder containing suspected marijuana was also confiscated. The substances tested positive for marijuana. The incident will be referred to the Office of Student Conduct.

DCFD transported a sick person to the hospital from McCabe Hall.

Public Safety responded to Nebraska Hall for a report of domestic violence. They arrested the suspect. MPD transported the suspect to the Second District Police Station for processing.

Jan. 22

DCFD transported a sick person to the hospital from Leonard Hall.

Public Safety responded to the lobby of McDowell Hall for a report of an intoxicated individual. The individual was conscious but not alert. She appeared to have vomit on her shirt. A witness (sick person’s sister) indicated the sick person started drinking at a local bar at 10:00 p.m. DCFD transported the sick person, accompanied by the witness, to the hospital.

A complainant was awakened and discovered a male she did not know standing at the foot of her bed in McDowell Hall. The complainant asked, “Who are you?” The suspect gave a first name. The complainant asked, “What are you doing?” The suspect replied, “Don’t worry about it,” and left the room. The suspect was later identified and admitted to being under the influence of alcohol at the time.

A student reported potential fraudulent activity being conducted through the American University Student Government’s online jobs board website. At this point, no loss has been incurred. Information is being gathered.

A student discovered a shattered window inside the Kogod Building. Facilities Management stated it was weather-related.

The Metropolitan Police Department and Public Safety responded to a noise complaint on 49th Street, NW. No noise was detected coming from the residence in question. MPD advised residents of the home to keep the noise level down. Attempts to contact the complainant were unsuccessful.

Jan. 23

Public Safety saw student 1 walking in the Letts/Anderson Quad with the assistance of students 2 and 3. Public Safety escorted them into the Letts lobby, where they met two resident assistants. Student 1 stated they started drinking around 10:00 p.m. at the Berkshires. Student 1 stated she drank four shots and a half-cup of cranberry and vodka. Student 1 stated she vomited three times prior to arriving on campus. A resident director arrived on the scene. A medical refusal form was signed.

While on patrol, a resident assistant heard a loud noise coming from a residence hall room in Centennial Hall. She knocked on the door. Student 1, a resident of the room, answered. The resident assistant saw a half gallon bottle of vodka in the room and smelled what she believed to be marijuana emanating from the room. She contacted a resident director. Student 2 told the resident director he was not an AU student. Further investigation revealed he is a current AU student. Several containers of suspected marijuana, a suspected marijuana cigarette, a scale, and other various paraphernalia were recovered from the room and given to Public Safety. Substances tested positive for marijuana. Student 1 stated he started smoking around 7:00 p.m. Student 1 disposed of the alcohol. The incident will be referred to the Office of Student Conduct.

A room in Letts Hall was entered and honey was poured on a chair. No property was taken.

Jan. 24

DCFD transported a sick person from Bender Library to the hospital.

DCFD released two individuals from a stuck elevator in Anderson Hall. No injuries were reported.

Jan. 25

A pedestrian reported she was crossing the road outside of Hughes Hall when a vehicle had to come to an abrupt stop in an attempt to avoid hitting her. She extended her hand and it came into contact with the vehicle. She went to the Health Center.

Public Safety responded to WAMU for a report of an injured person. The injury occurred in the 4400 block of Wisconsin Avenue NW. The injured person indicated a co-worker was going to give her a ride to the hospital.

At 5:45 p.m., a student placed her wallet on a windowsill in Bender Arena. At 6:30 p.m., she discovered it was missing. Unauthorized charges were made on her bank cards. MPD was contacted. The complainant refused to file a report with MPD.
