Women’s lacrosse falls to Colgate Raiders in close contest

Eagles drop conference match after falling behind early

The AU women’s lacrosse team suffered a 15-12 defeat against the Colgate University Raiders on Saturday afternoon in Hamilton, N.Y.

Kimberly Collins, Lauren Schoenberger and Chiara Speziale each scored two goals in the Eagles’ first away game against a Patriot League opponent this season.

It was a rough start for the Eagles who fell behind 8-2 in the first 12 minutes of the game.

The Eagles refused to be put away that early and quickly stepped up with back-to-back goals by sophomore Samantha Marshall and junior Emily Stankiewicz.

Just as the Eagles started to gain momentum, Colgate’s Courtney Miller knocked in the third of her game-high four goals to put the Raiders ahead by five. The first half ended on a goal from AU senior Lisa Schaaf to put the score at 9-5.

AU continued to play catch-up for the entirety of the second half.

Freshman Emily Maher jumped right out with a goal, but the Raiders answered immediately with one of their own. Down by four, the Eagles went on a 3-0 run that lasted until the 22-minute mark, with goals from Collins, Speziale and Schoenberger.

The run made the score 10-9 and marked one of two times AU would come up one short of a tie score in the second half. But with less than 12 minutes to play, Emily Burton and Schoenberger came up big with a pair of goals that tied the game at 11.

However, the excitement on the AU side was short lived, as the Eagles quickly gave up two more goals, falling behind once again. Collins scored the final goal of the day for AU, marking the third time the women railed by one. The contest ended with two Colgate goals, putting the game out of reach 15-12.

Despite the loss, AU did put up an honorable offensive effort. In addition to their pair of goals, Collins and Schoenberger added three and two assists respectively. Junior goalkeeper Kaska Komosinski made five saves against the Raiders.

The Eagles will travel to Fairfax, Va. on Wednesday to take on the George Mason University Patriots. The team returns to Jacobs Field the following Saturday to battle the Bucknell University Bison.
