The AU women’s soccer team dropped its first game of the season Sunday, falling 4-0 on the road to the Georgetown Hoyas.
Samantha Baker, Jessica Clinton, Alexa St. Martin and Daphne Corboz each tallied one goal for the Hoyas (2-0), who opened the season ranked No. 23 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Preseason Poll. The Eagles (1-1) struggled to put together any offensive attack throughout the game, recording no shots in the first half and one on the afternoon.
“We learned as a team that we need to come out with more energy, as we did in the second half,” Head Coach Dave Bucciero told AU Athletics. “Georgetown is a very talented team, but we will learn from this match and be a better team because of it.”
After the start of the match was delayed 40 minutes due to weather, the Hoyas wasted no time in getting on the board. Baker took a free kick just over three minutes into the game and was able to curl it into the top left corner for a 1-0 Georgetown advantage.
The Hoyas continued to threaten, as they earned seven corner kicks and fired six shots before notching the game’s second goal in the 32nd minute. Clinton scored her first collegiate goal off a rebound to put Georgetown up 2-0 after AU goalkeeper Klare Lazor denied a St. Martin shot.
Four minutes later, St. Martin found the back of the net off an assist from Kaitlin Brenn. With five minutes remaining in the first half, a hour and a half weather delay put a temporary halt to the match.
The second half saw the Hoyas continue to attack, and Georgetown netted its fourth goal in the 80th minute. Ingrid Wells brought Lazor out of the net, and Corboz booted one into the open goal for a 4-0 lead.
The Hoyas held a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks on the afternoon, and outshot the Eagles 17-1. Jasmine Mohandesi attempted AU’s lone shot in the 83rd minute.
Lazor played all 90 minutes in net for the Eagles, making four saves. Hanna Monson started in goal for Georgetown before giving way to Elizabeth Hanna for the final 12 minutes.
The Eagles will next head to the University of Vermont for a pair of games later this week. Friday, Aug. 26, AU will take on the New Hampshire Wildcats before facing the Vermont Catamounts Sunday, Aug. 28.
