Gotye and Kimbra bring international flavor to 9:30 club

There must be something good going on down under.

Hailing from Australia, Gotye’s first stint at the 9:30 club on Thursday, March 22 happens to also be sold out. The man behind the electro-pop sound of Gotye is Wally de Backer, who was born in Belgium but raised from an early age in the Aussie city of Melbourne.

For most of his teen years, Gotye wrote songs in his bedroom. After his band Downstares didn’t go far, de Becker branched out and went solo. And as a result, Gotye was born.

In 2003, Gotye’s first album “Boardface” was released. This past December, his third album, “Making Mirrors” finally hit it big, and he received a massive amount of radio play, especially in the States.

Complimenting Gotye on Thursday, March 22 will be Kimbra, the New Zealand songstress who accompanies Gotye on his smash single “Somebody I Used To Know.” Fresh off her performances at last week’s South by Southwest music festival, Kimbra’s jazzy brand of pop pairs her airy, accented vocals with a neo-soul bounce.

Given his large amount of recognition both artists have garnered overseas, it’s about time Kimbra and Gotye’s music flooded the ears of America. Even when the specific songs are slow and centered on heartbreak, both artists produce pop that’s fun and friendly on the ears.

Prepare for a tranquil night full of good beats, tunes and company provided by Gotye and Kimbra. Seeing as to how this show has been sold out for months, keep an eye out for Gotye next time he visits the District!
