SASA hosts annual Holi springtime festival on Quad

The South Asian Student Association brought some color to a gray Sunday afternoon by hosting Holi, the Hindi springtime “Festival of Colors.”

This year marked SASA’s fifth year hosting Holi at AU. The event began at 11:30 a.m. with food and music and lasted until around 3 p.m.

Holi has three basic parts: color, water and fun. The throwing of colored dye followed by water symbolizes and celebrates the coming of spring.

AU students joined in on the celebration with water guns, water balloons, hoses, buckets and packets of special Holi dye all supplied by SASA.

Many students remained outside until the end of the event, dancing and enjoying techno and Bhangra music excellently DJed by SASA member Aditya Davey.

“It’s fun, I came here last year,” said Dima Calnan, a sophomore in the School of Public Affairs. “Last year’s [Holi] was a lot warmer and had more people but this is fun and the music is great! Last year, my friends saw all the Facebook pictures of the event and they were all jealous!”

Saniya Seera, also a SASA member, said she was excited to see more people join in as the event went on.

“The music woke us up over at Hughes so we came over to see what was happening,” said Francesca Cameron, a freshman in SIS, who joined in Holi fun.

Madhavi Reddi, a sophomore in the School of Communication and an SASA member, raved about the success of the event despite the gloomy weather.

“Everyone showed up on time; it was great!” she said.
