Student Government presidential candidate Abigail Finn violated the new Board of Election’s policy by filming a campaign video on the Quad March 8. As punishment, Finn will not be allowed to campaign until noon March 19, 12 hours after the midnight start time.
Candidates are not allowed to campaign, which includes publicly filming election material, until midnight March 19, according to Phil Cardarella, chairman of the Board of Elections.
The BOE did not want spring break to interrupt campaigning and did not want to have to hold the elections before the break, Cardarella said in an email.
Before the campaigning starts, candidates can create videos that are only privately filmed, shown to campaign staff and feature campaign staff.
Finn knew about the recently released board opinion declaring filming as active campaigning.
She and her staff were excited about her official candidacy and forgot about the rule, Finn said.
She said she and her campaign staff will continue with their plans, only 12 hours later.
“We still do feel confident,” Finn said. Finn later commented that they will be more careful about the policies in the future.
