Crime Alert: Sex offense on Massachusetts Avenue

A sex offense occurred near main campus along Massachusetts Avenue on Sept. 7 at approximately 4:30 a.m. The victim in this case is an AU student.

While walking along Massachusetts Avenue between the Berkshire Apartments and Ward Circle, the suspect approached the victim from behind and grabbed the victim’s chest. As the victim screamed for help, the suspect proceeded to flee east down Massachusetts Avenue towards the Berkshire Apartments.

The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 6’3” tall, and appeared to be about 20 years old. He had a muscular build and a crew cut. The suspect was last seen wearing a fitted dark-colored T-shirt.

Safety Tips •Walk in groups whenever possible and look out for each other. •Avoid isolated and dark areas. •Carry your cell phone and keep it accessible. •If you are approached, take note of the person’s appearance, clothing and anything unusual that will help identify the suspect. •Be aware of the emergency telephones (yellow boxes on pillars, blue light phone towers and red telephones) located on campus, in building lobbies, elevators and in parking lots. •Do not let anyone follow you into the building, or admit anyone as a guest unless they are your guest. •Report any suspicious activity or suspicious individuals to the Department of Public Safety. •Program AU Public Safety into your cell phone for emergencies: 202-885-3636. •Use the Public Safety Escort Service while walking on campus at night.
