Charles A. Hamilton, 59, has been charged with the death of former AU professor Ruth Allen.

Former AU professor allegedly shot by brother

Correction appended

Former AU professor Ruth Allen, 68, died on Oct. 16. Her 59-year-old brother Charles A. Hamilton has been charged with murder, according to a press release from Fairfax County Police.

Allen taught at AU as an assistant professor for one year during the 1984-1985 academic year. She taught in the College of Public and International Affairs, which is now the School of Public Affairs, according to Maralee Csellar, associate director of media relations.

Allen disagreed with her brother’s opinions concerning the care of a third sibling who had suffered a stroke, her husband, George Allen, told The Washington Post. Hamilton allegedly shot Allen in front of their mother, Marion Hamilton, 91, during an angry discussion.

Fairfax County police took Charles Hamilton into custody on Oct. 16, according to the Post.

Correction: This article originally incorrectly stated that police took "George Hamilton," instead Charles Hamilton, into custody. The caption on the photo of Hamilton also initially credited Fairfield County Police. It's from the Fairfax County Police.
