Student groups raised $180 and collected canned goods at a Hurricane Sandy Relief Concert on Jan. 19 to support New Jersey and New York residents affected by the storm.
The Community Service Coalition hosted the event in the Tavern. Performance groups included On a Sensual Note, AU Bhangra, Mission Improvable and Blends with Benefits.
“When I heard about the event it sounded like a great opportunity,” Kirra Sharpe, manager of Blends with Benefits and a junior in the College of Arts and Sciences, said. “We love performing, and this is a great cause.”
The Hurricane Sandy Relief Concert was a part of AU’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, which gave students the opportunity to volunteer and help with various community service projects, according to Ben Derby, deputy director of the Community Service Coalition.
“So many of AU’s students are from New Jersey and New York,” Derby said. “This is a way that students can give back and help those that are most affected by the storm.”
