Ambient indie-rockers Deerhunter will be performing at Sixth & I Historic Synagogue on April 22 at 8 p.m., courtesy of a collaboration between several D.C. college radio stations including AU's student-run radio station WVAU.
A limited number of tickets had been made available for free to AU students, but they quickly ran out due to high demand. For those still interested, tickets will be available to the general public for $20 starting March 22. The openers have yet to be announced.
Deerhunter is as known for its performance antics as they are for its experimental, genre-blending music. Lead singer Bradford Cox has been reported to perform in sundresses or covered in fake blood. He has also responded to a heckler asking for "My Sharona" by performing only an hour-long extended version of the song for an entire set.
A self-described "ambient-punk" band, Deerhunter is characterized by its minimalist, noise rock undertones. Its second album, "Cryptograms," took two tries in the studio to get right (they discarded the first recording of the album), but upon completion became the basis for the current sound that Deerhunter is known for.
Since then, it has released two more albums: "Microcastle" and "Halcyon Digest." The latter yielded one of the band's most popular songs, "Helicopter." The track encapsulates much of Deerhunter's sound: an auditory dream with floaty guitars and lyrics that are purposefully repetitive.
