Women’s soccer team secures first victory of season

It took three games for new women’s soccer head coach Anabel Jimenez Hering to secure her first victory.

The AU women’s soccer team snapped its two-game losing streak with a 1-0 victory during the Aug. 30 game against Howard University.

The scoring goal came off the foot of junior Lindsay Muri, who took a pass from sophomore Kelly Donovan. It was Muri’s first goal of the season and Donovan’s first assist.

Muri was one of the most active players on the offensive end, leading the Eagles (1-2-0, 0-0-0 PL) with five shots, four on goal. Midfielder Michaela Cowgill was second on the team with four shots. Six Eagles registered at least one shot. The Eagles outshot the Bison by a total of 9-3.

Goalkeeping for the Eagles was split between Charlene Belanger and Sarah Dejak. Belanger posted two saves while Dejak had one.

The AU defense played exceptionally well holding the Bison (0-1-1, 0-0-0 MEAC) to just one shot in the second half.

Defender Kirsten Eriksen was named the AU Student-Athlete of the Week on earlier this week.

AU will continue on its second game of a three game road trip when they travel to take on Liberty University Sept. 1 in Lynchburg V.A.. The Eagles will return to campus Sept. 10 to host local rival George Mason University.
