Eagles take second leg of DC Volleyball Challenge

In the first game of a doubleheader at home, the AU women’s volleyball team conducted their second straight win of the D.C. Volleyball Challenge as they swept Georgetown University 3-0 on Aug. 30.

Georgetown proved to be more competitive than the previous competitor Howard University. The first set was a seesaw affair that was tied at nine apiece early on. AU pulled away on a 16-5 run to en route to a 25-14 victory.

The second set was a continuation of AU dominance. Georgetown could not get anything established and the closest the Hoyas came was reducing the deficit to eight points as AU managed to take the second set 25-13.

Unlike the previous two sets, Georgetown came out with a determined in a set which featured 11 different lead changes. Eventually though, AU would score three straight points to take a 22-19 lead that would eventually lead to a 25-22 win and their
second sweep in a row.

For the second straight game, Kristyna Lindovska would be the AU leader in kills with 14 while Monika Smidova would have an excellent game with 34 assists, seven kills, seven digs and four blocks. AU hit .324 as a team while holding Georgetown to a .144 percentage. For Georgetown, the leader in kills was Lauren Saar with 11 and the assist leader was Caitlin Brauneis with 25.
