Field hockey loses momentum, game against Miami (Ohio)

The AU field hockey team cooled down in the second half of their 3-2 loss to the Miami Redhawks on Sept. 14 at the Terrapin Invitational hosted at the University of Maryland at College Park.

The No. 20 Eagles (3-2, 0-0 PL) came out strong with junior Kati Rothenhoefer scoring off of a penalty stroke less than three minutes into the game.

AU’s defense was unyielding in the first period limiting the Redhawks ( 3-3,0-0 ) to just two shots on goal and only one penalty corner.

Complementing the Eagles defense in the first period was AU’s offense, which unleashed 10 shots on the Redhawks’ goal and forced three penalty corners. The Eagles second goal came by junior midfielder Grace Wilson off of a penalty corner 17:34 minutes into the game which was assisted by junior midfielders Carly Atchison and Rebecca Treharne.

Despite their first half dominance, the Eagles fell apart in the second period.

AU’s offense put up similar first half statistics in the second half with four penalty corners and five shots but failed to make an impact on the scoreboard.

AU’s defense showed vulnerability that was unseen throughout the first period. AU gave up nine shots along with five penalty corners, which resulted in three goals for Miami in the second half. The game tying and go ahead goal for the Redhawks came in a three minute window.

Even with two penalty corners and four shots in the final 10 minutes the Eagles could not find the equalizer.

The Eagles came into this contest ranked No. 20 in the latest polls. but will now look to claw their way back with a win as they continue the Terrapin Invitational against Columbia on Sept. 15.
