Mens and womens cross country team record top five finishes at Navy Invitational

Senior Julia Sullivan set the pace for all AU runners with a fifth place finish as the Eagles competed Sept. 14 at the Navy Invitational.

The finish is Sullivan’s second highest of the season after registering a third place finish at the Catholic University Invitational. It is also the second time this season that Sullivan has been the highest finishing runner from the women’s team.

Sullivan was one of four other Eagle runners on the women’s team to record top 15 finishes. The combination of freshman Corina Velazco, freshman Julienne DeVita, senior Carly Birkhold and freshman Reagan Kolakowski taking the 12 through 15 spots in the race.

Sophomore Kelseagh Budris would place 33rd and senior Alexandra Tyburski in 46th out of 88 runners.

The Eagles finished third out of seven teams competing with Navy winning the women’s side.

For the men, Nick Regan led the team, placing ninth with a time of 24:51.67. In the previous two meets, Regan was also the highest placing finisher having previously two consecutive first place finishes.

Other finishers for AU included freshman Brendan Johnson and John Pope finishing consecutively in 13th and 14th place out of 76 runners.

Senior Tom Woermer and senior Matiss Batarags also finished consecutively taking 23rd and 24th, respectively.

Sophomore Joshua Ellis placed 29th, senior Constantine Matsakis came in 37th and AU’s final runner sophomore David McCombs finished 49th.

Georgetown would take the men’s title as AU came in third.

Both the men’s and women’s team have not recorded any worse than a fourth place finish in the first three matches to open the season.

The Eagles will return to action Oct. 5 when they travel to Bethlehem, Penn. to to participate in the Paul Short Invitational.
