Men’s soccer snaps winless streak with victory over Longwood

AU men’s soccer team ended its four-match losing streak after defeating Longwood (1-3-1, 0-0-0, Big South) 1-0 on Sept. 17 in Farmville, Va.

The lone goal of the game came when freshman forward Dale Ludwig passed the ball from the right side of the penalty box to senior forward Colin Seigfried who put the ball in the back net. The goal was the first of the season for Seigfried and the third assist for Ludwig who was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week earlier in the month.

“Our defending was excellent and we could have easily had one or two more goals,” head coach Todd West told AUEagles.com. “I am quite pleased with an away victory and our progression as a team as we posted our second shutout in a row.”

AU put offensive pressure on Longwood throughout the match. AU had 17 total shots in the game, with 11 of them on goal, compared to Longwood’s total of nine shots. The Eagles also held the advantage on corner kicks 6-2.

Ludwig, who led AU with 13 shots going into Tuesday’s match, had two shots against the Lancers. Junior midfielder Conor Osborne, freshman forward Joe Iraola and Seigfreid each had a team high of three shots in the match.

Senior goalkeeper Billy Knutsen recorded four saves in this match. Entering Tuesday, Knutsen had posted the most saves in the Patriot League this season. The win marks the second straight game the Eagles have recorded a shutout.

AU will play their next three games at home on Reeves Field starting Sept. 21 against Liberty University. This homestand will include AU’s first conference match on Sept. 28 against Lehigh University.
