Offense struggles in women’s soccer team loss to Liberty

The AU women’s soccer team fell 2-0 to Liberty University on Sept. 1 in Lynchburg, Va. despite eight saves by Eagles goalie Charlene Belanger.

The Eagles (1-3-0, 0-0-0 PL) struggled defensively early on as Liberty (2-1-0, 0-0-0 Big South) managed to total 10 shots in the opening period. Offensively, the Eagles only managed three shots in the first half and did not have any in the second half.

The Eagles allowed the game-winning goal in the 11th minute. Liberty’s Megan Warner took a pass from Alanna Dunkle and shot it from the left side of the box. The Eagles responded by holding Liberty scoreless until 81:09 of the second half.

Liberty managed 11 shots in the second half and dominated defensively by holding AU to zero shots.

Lindsay Muri, Sara Perlman, and Michaela Cowgill each had a shot attempt during the game. Cowgill had AU’s lone shot on goal.

AU’s record drops to and looks to rebound Sept. 6 at La Salle at 7 p.m.
