If there is one thing that Mauro Remiddi knows how to do well, it is how to create an immediate connection with the listener – mostly in a transcendental and spiritual manner. On Porcelain Raft’s latest album, “Permanent Signal,” Remiddi does not fall flat. In a recent interview with The Eagle, he explained the theme of his latest work.
“I was touring a lot from my earlier album, “Strange Weekend,” with M83 so things were a bit crazy, and I was in New York, a place I didn’t know very well. It was not my normal life. It was quite the transition to be constantly on the road, so I felt very fragile and constantly in this state of transition,” Remiddi said.
A change of lifestyle and scenery certainly influenced him, and as a result, “Permanent Signal” evoked a far more melancholy and gloomy feel.
“It was a weird process because I focused more on the songwriting and letting myself go. It was the first time I wrote and recorded the songs at the same time at the top of my head. It’s easier to portray your feelings that way,” he said.
Remiddi also mentioned that the band’s new album has some contributions from Yuck’s Jonny Rogoff on the drums and The Antlers’ bassist Darby Cicci.
“It’s always great to record by yourself but I wanted this album to have some external input with not just my energy. Jonny Rogoff is a great musician and human being and we’re old friends, so it was great to work with him. He was so good that he finished recording in just two days! I wish he was not that good, cause then he could have stayed a little longer,” he chuckled.
Porcelain Raft performed at Rock & Roll Hotel this past weekend.
