Volleyball records straight set victory over Navy

The AU volleyball team recorded its 14th sweep of the season after defeating the United States Naval Academy Oct. 18. in Annapolis, Md.

AU (21-2, 7-1, PL) dominated its first set, getting an early 5-1 advantage on the Midshipmen (8-11, 4-4, PL) on a kill by junior outside hitter Kristyna Lindovska. AU maintained its lead for the rest of the set, going on a 9-1 run late in the game to win the set soundly 25-12.

The Midshipmen fought hard in the second set despite another early AU advantage. AU led 16-6 in the second set before Navy came back on an 8-2 run, forcing an AU timeout. The Midshipmen were within three points at 22-19, but the Eagles secured the win thanks to two straight kills by sophomore outside hitter Allison Cappellino and a service error by the Midshipmen.

Cappellino would record a double-double in the contest leading the offense with a team high 12 kills and defensively with 13 digs.

The Eagles blazed through the third set for another dominant win over the Midshipmen. AU kept its lead for the entire set after gaining a 2-1 advantage. Seven players notched kills in the third set to contribute to the Eagles’ 25-12 third and final set of the game.

Beating the Navy marked the third straight win for Eagles. AU’s last three games have been on the road.

Junior middle blocker Kelly McCaddin hit a team high .625. Junior setter Monika Smidova added 31 assists to the Eagles’ effort.

The Eagles will play the last of four straight away games when they play Loyola University Maryland Oct. 25.
