Men’s track and field record seven top 10 finishes

The men’s indoor track team opened its 2013-14 season with seven top ten finishers at the Navy Invitational against seven other teams in Annapolis, Md on Dec. 6.

AU recorded three top ten in both 1500-meter run and the 3000-meter run.

Eagle sophomore David McCombs placed No. 5 in the 1500-meter run with career-best 4:03.41, only 11 seconds behind Georgetown’s place finisher Michael Reher.

AU’s Matiss Batarags finished in No. 7 with a time of 4:07.05. Ian Lutz rounded out the top 10 with an 4:11.56 finish.

In the 3000-meter run Nick Regan recorded an 8:27.40 to earn him fourth place, the highest AU placed in individual events at the Navy Invitational. Joshua Ellis placed ninth with 8:36.44 followed by Bernard Skomal at 10th with 9:07.61. Sophomores Ellis and Skomal also surpassed their career high marks for the 3000-meter race.

The Eagles’ 4×800 meter relay team came in second, which consisted of Peter Rowe, Ian Lutz, John Pope and Liam May. With an 8:08.65 ending time AU was only edged out by Georgetown by 10 seconds.

The Naval Academy largely dominated the Navy Invitational. The Midshipmen took home first place in the 10 of the 17 events. Naval Academy placed in 16 of the 17 events included in the completion.

The men’s track and field team will return to action Jan. 11 at United States Naval Academy for another Navy Invitational.
