AU students kicked off Martin Luther King Jr. Week with a day of service as students volunteered at non-profit organizations throughout D.C.
Organized by AU’s Center for Community Engagement and Service, the week’s events were held Jan. 20-28 at various locations around campus. The week included a range of opportunities including volunteer events, panels, discussions, performing arts and more, all creating a chance to learn about Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement’s history and impact.
Approximately 400 students volunteered in targeted issue areas such as hunger and homelessness, HIV/AIDS, senior living, education and youth development and more, according to the CCES website.
A detailed schedule of the rest of the week’s events can be found on AU’s website. Some specific issues include women in the Civil Rights Movement, a W.E.B Dubois book discussion and current day perceptions of King Jr.
