Alpha Xi Delta, a sorority closely affiliated with the organization Autism Speaks, joined AU as the newest sorority in 20 years.
The Panhellenic Association decided to invite a new sorority to AU due to heightened interest in greek life at AU in recent years. An Alpha Xi Delta chapter will provide another option to women who could not find their place in any of the seven existing chapters, President of the AU Panhellenic Association Cindy Zhang said.
“A number of different organizations expressed interest in colonizing at American University, but as a community, we thought that Alpha Xi Delta was the best fit,” Zhang said.
Alpha Xi Delta’s colonization recruitment began Jan. 21 after Panhellenic Formal Recruitment. The sorority’s bid day will be held Feb. 1.
Founded at Lombard College in Illinois, Alpha Xi Delta is a social sorority with over 150,000 members in 116 chapters across the country. The sorority runs events like the AmaXIng Challenge and participates in the National Walk Now for Autism Speaks in D.C. to raise money and promote autism awareness.
“We are confident that Alpha Xi Delta will do well on this campus given the support by the community and interest that has been expressed for the organization and in the Greek community overall,” Zhang said.
