Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) will speak at AU on Jan. 21, at 7 p.m. in the McDowell Formal Lounge, hosted by the Kennedy Political Union and the Office of the University Chaplain.
The event will be the first KPU event of the semester and is part of the Dr. Martin Luther King Week 2014.
Cummings represents Maryland’s 7th Congressional District, which covers Baltimore and parts of central Maryland. He has held the office since 1996.
Prior to serving in Congress, Cummings was a delegate in the Maryland House of Delegates where he served as the first African American to be named as the Speaker Pro Tem, according to a KPU press release.
“We look forward to working with the Office of the University Chaplain’s R. Bruce Poynter lecture program to host Congressman Cummings during Dr. Martin Luther King Week 2014 planned by the Center for Community Service and Engagement,” KPU Director Chandler Thornton said in a press release.
