Washington College of Law students and faculty are trading law books for microphones as they put on WCL’s annual satirical musical comedy.
The 19-year-old show is part of the five-month Founders’ Celebration and will run from Feb. 27 until March 1, according to WCL’s website.
The Founders’ Celebration runs from Jan. 13 to May 23 with the various programs ranging from two hours to several days. In honor of its founding, WCL hosts a series of events aimed to engage attendees with a wide variety of legal topics, from women’s rights to diversity and business law.
WCL was founded in 1898 by Ellen Spencer Mussey and Emma Gillett and is the first law school in the country founded by women, according to its website.
“Washington College of Law has a very extensive and wide ranging schedule of programs offering many opportunities for our students to network with 1,000 plus speakers every year,” Jennifer Dabson, co-chair of the law school’s Special Interest Group, said.
New to this year’s Founders’ Celebration is the introduction of an event app and Facebook page. Attendees can download the WCL Founders 2014 app for free on their smartphones and like the Facebook page “Special Events & Continuing Legal Education” to learn more information on the various programs and events, Dabson said.
One of the highlights of the Founders’ Celebration is the Women and the Law Leadership Award Luncheon, which honors female WCL alumni. Judy Smith, a crisis manager who inspired the role of Olivia Pope in the hit TV series “Scandal,” received the award during last year’s luncheon.
“We are looking forward to continuing to organize an extensive range of programs on a variety of topics that bring 10,000 plus attendees to Washington College of Law,” Dabson said of this year’s Founders’ Celebration.
