Comeback not enough in Lacrosse defeat against BU

The AU women’s lacrosse team comeback fell short as the Eagles dropped 12-11 to the Boston University Terriers March 8 at Jacobs Field.

“We’ve done it before, we’ve come back and come out on top but unfortunately it wasn’t the result this time,” head coach Emma Wallace said.

The game was deadlocked through the first 10 minutes with a goal from the Eagles’ (2-5, 0-1 PL) senior midfielder Emily Maher at 21:09, which tied the game at two.

Maher’s goal was the last scored until a score by BU’s Jenna Boarman at 13:47 began a 6-0 BU (1-4, 1-0 PL) run, which included four separate instances where the Terriers scored back-to-back goals within one minute.

When the final goal of the run was scored with 6:23 remaining left in the first half, BU was up 9-2.

With less than five minutes remaining in the half, AU recorded a pair of goals, first from sophomore midfielder Olivia Mangan at 4:28 and then from sophomore midfielder Terese Buechli at 2:27 to put the score at a 9-4 entering the break.

“We were confident at the half that we could pull it together and execute our game plan a little more efficiently,” Wallace said.

Buechli scored the first goal of the second half after she received a pass from Maher at the side of the net and put the ball past BU keeper Caroline Megan.

Goals from sophomore attacker Jessica Wojciechowski at 26:29 and freshman midfielder Madison Hoon at 25:18 cut the Terrier lead to two. BU responded by scoring their 10 goal of the game at 22:12 and pushed its lead back to three goals.

Despite the goal, AU’s offense continued to mount pressure with Wojciechowski and Maher tallying their second goal of the game at 17:07 and 14:52, respectively.

The Eagles would score the equalizer at 14:52 when Jamie Silverman recorded her second of the game off a free position shot.

The game did not remain tied for long as less than three minutes after Silverman’s goal, BU’s Kelsey Marafioti scored at 12:04 to break the tie. The Terriers scored another goal at 7:10 to go up two.

“It’s the fastbreak and that’s been our problem all year,” Wallace said about how BU was able to regain the lead late in the game.

With 1:59 remaining, Wojciechowski picked up the hat trick to make it a one possession game.

“This one stings. You know it’s a Patriot League game. I think had we cleaned up some errors and gone to the cage when we needed to go to the cage, we would have come out on top,” Wallace said.

AU had one last offensive possession in the final minute of the game but the lone shot by Hoon was saved by Megan and allowed the Terriers to clinch the 12-11 victory.

The Eagles will be back in action March 15 when they travel to Worcester, Mass. to take on the College of the Holy Cross.
