Pope and Regan lead AU runners, posting qualifying times at Maryland Invitational

On March 30, the men’s and women’s track teams participated in the Maryland Invitational in College Park, Md with senior John Pope and junior Nick Regan who both received IC4A qualifying times by finishing in the top two places for the 5,000-meter run.

Pope won the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:40.48. Regan placed second, setting a personal best time of 14:42.01. Regan continued his string of strong performances after last week’s personal best time in the 1,500 meter run, where he led AU to a fourth place finish at the Navy Invitational.

In the men’s 1,500-meter run, the Eagles took second and third when sophomore Joshua Ellis finished with a time of 3:59.88, while senior Constantine Matsakis finished third with a time of 4:09.69. Senior Matiss Batarags finished in the top 10, placing 10th with a time of 4:09.69.

Freshman Brendan Johnson had a strong showing, finishing fifth in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:44.41. Junior Ian Mutz also recorded a top-ten result, finishing eighth with a time of 9:05.56.

For the women’s team, freshman Julienne DeVita had the highest-placed finish, placing fifth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:50.81. The Eagles also recorded three top 10 finishes in the 800-meter run. Senior Alexandra Tyburski finished seventh with a time of 2:20.78, senior Julia Sullivan finished eighth with a time of 2:23.68 and freshman Corina Velazco finished ninth with a time of 2:24.25.

The next meet for AU will be the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Va. from April 3-5.
