The AU women’s lacrosse team fell at the hands of the Bucknell University Bisons in Lewisburg, Pa. on March 29, losing 11-10, despite an early first-half lead and two attempts to tie the Bisons in the second half.
After surrendering the first goal of the game, the Eagles (4-8, 0-4, PL) tore into the Bisons, scoring five consecutive goals including two goals each by sophomore attack Jessica Wojciechowski and sophomore midfielder Olivia Mangan, who went on to earn a game-high of four goals.
Following the 5-0 AU run, Bucknell (1-10, 1-4, PL) responded with a run of its own, scoring six consecutive goals capped off by a goal from Bucknell junior midfielder Cori Thielemann with 4:34 remaining in the first half. AU senior midfielder Emily Maher stopped the Bison run by scoring a goal with 1:32 remaining in the first half. The Eagles trailed 7-6 going into the break.
In the first eight minutes of the second half, the Bisons expanded their lead to three goals following a shot from Bucknell senior midfielder Katelyn Miller, despite the Bisons being a man down situation. Miller’s shot put the Bisons up 10-7. Mangan kept AU in the game by putting the team on her back, adding her fourth goal with 19:06 remaining in the game, bringing the Eagles’ deficit to two goals at 10-8.
However, the Bisons responded to Mangan’s shot quickly. Just10 seconds later, Bucknell’s senior attack Lindsey Ferro answered with a shot of her own to put the Bisons ahead 11-8.
The Eagles made one last push against the Bisons in the second half. Senior attack Alex Lugovina and junior attack Jamie Silverman both scored to bring the Eagles back to within one goal of the Bisons at 11-10 with 12:18 remaining.
Unfortunately, the Eagles were unable to complete the comeback as AU was shut out the remainder of the game.
The game marked the Bisons’ first win this season. The Eagles have yet to beat another Patriot League team.
AU’s defeat ended the team’s two-game winning streak. AU returns to action on April 1 when it takes on University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. The game will be AU’s last non-conference game of the regular season.
