No. 14 Men’s Soccer drops Patriot League opener 2-1

The Eagles, who came into the game ranked 14th in the nation, dropped their first Patriot League game against Lehigh 2-1.

AU (6-2-1, 0-1) outshot the Mountain Hawks (5-3-0, 1-0) 20-17, but Lehigh managed to secure a winning goal in the 88th minute on a deflected shot from junior midfielder Brian Vial.

Both team’s earned a goal off corner kicks, and Lehigh earned the first point during the 43rd minute. The Eagles tied the game just four minutes into the second half, with junior midfielder Liam Robley setting up senior defender Christian Robbs, who nailed a headed into the goal.

The game remained even after Robb’s goal, but with three minutes to play, Lehigh took over. Vail controlled the ball in the Eagles zone and sent a powerful shot that rocketed off AU junior goalkeeper Dylan Hobert and into the net to secured the game-winning point for the Mountain Hawks.

The Eagles return to Reeves Field on Oct. 4 to for another Patriot Leauge matchup when they take on the College of Holy Cross at 1 p.m.
