Indie electro group Capital Cities will be coming to D.C.’s 9:30 Club on Nov. 1.
The group intertwines dance beats and synth with tasteful brass. If you’ve ever talked to someone who’s seen Capital Cities live, they’ll tell you the band puts on a phenomenal show.
Los Angeles natives Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian stumbled across each other’s paths in 2011, quickly becoming acquainted writing music together as a duo. When they released their song “Safe and Sound” online, it quickly went viral and attracted attention.
Following the reaction to the single, the duo was joined by Manny Quintero (bass), Spencer Ludwig (trumpet), Nick Merwin (guitar) and Channing Holmes (drums). In 2013, the group released its album “In a Tidal Wave of Mystery” and has kept a steady touring schedule.
The band has not released any new records since its debut, but it did release the “Kangaroo Court EP.” While it mostly just held remixes of the original track, there was one new song on the EP -- a cover of The Bee Gees’ hit “Stayin’ Alive,” bringing a modernized, more electronic element to the classic and making it more relevant to this generation’s tastes.
With a sound somewhere between the melodic elements of AWOLNATION and the electronic feel of MGMT, Capital Cities is certainly off to a good start in the industry. Their high-energy, stellar performances are not to be missed.
Capital Cities will perform at the 9:30 Club on Nov. 1 with openers Sneaky Sound System and Night Terrors of 1927. Doors are at 5pm and tickets are available at Ticketfly.
