Correction appended
Police detained the man who escaped from the Psychiatric Institute of Washington in Tenleytown earlier today, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
The man made it across town to the east side of the Anacostia River, which is covered by the sixth police district, before he was apprehended, MPD spokesperson Gwendolyn Crump said.
The 17-year-old black male, who has been previously charged in a stabbing incident, escaped from the institute at approximately 11:20 a.m. and was described as dangerous, according to a release from the MPD.
This is the second time someone has escaped from the institute in three months. In November a man fled MPD custody shortly after he was transported to the institute, The Eagle previously reported.
The Psychiatric Institute of Washington is located at 4228 Wisconsin Avenue, next to AU's Harold and Sylvia Greenberg Theatre.
MPD’s release to the press went out at 12:55 p.m. The AU alert was sent to students at 1:12 p.m.
